Pad To Paper Ink Blending for Shadow Dies
    By Ashlea Cornell

Hello everyone! My name is Ashlea and I am so excited to be on the Birch Press Designs blog for the first time. I have always loved the Birch Press Designs style and quality of product, and I am thrilled to be a part of this team to help inspire and spark ideas! For my first post, I thought I’d focus on a simple but effective technique using shadow dies. Since Birch Press has many word and shadow dies, I wanted to provide ideas of different ways to use them as often as possible! I love the pad to paper technique of rubbing an ink pad onto a piece of card stock in order to transfer a very rich and vibrant color that you just can’t get from the traditional ink blenders. Here’s a video showing a detailed tutorial of how I achieved this look.

I love this technique as it allows me to stretch my uses for these word and shadow dies. It’s super simple!

First, you’ll want to pick 3-4 colors of ink pads that won’t turn “muddy” when the colors meet. Basically, you’ll want to choose colors close to each other on the color wheel. I used Catherine Pooler inks for my pad to paper technique here because I love her pads, especially for pad to paper techniques.

Once I blended all of my colors and cut the shadow die out using the ink blended spaces, I adhered all of the letters to the shadow dies and adhered them to a card front cut with Memory Box Wrapped Stitched Rectangles dies to add a little interest to the border.

Finally, I adhered all of the word dies to the card front with foam tape to add dimension and heat embossed the sentiment “You’re In My Heart” from the Lingo Love stamp set and adhered that over the second word die down.

I hope that you’ve enjoyed learning a bit about how I created this card using the ink pad to paper technique. I hope you’ll try it out on your cards and enjoy it as much as I do! Thanks so much for stopping by and I’ll see you again soon!

Sending Lots of Love | By Eloise Blue

Hello friends, Eloise here and today I’ll be using a few older products to create one last Valentine’s Day card. I used the Cherish Plate Set along with Perfect Hearts Dies and the Sending Love Stamp Set.

I started off with die cutting each of the Cherish Layer Dies from different shades of red cardstock. I then adhered them all together using liquid glue. I measured out the size of the Scallop Frame and cut down the layered panel accordingly. I then die cut the frame from white cardstock. I added foam tape onto the back of the frame and adhered it over the layered panel.

I then used the Perfect Hearts Dies and cut out a heart with vellum. I then used the Sending Love Stamp Set, stamped and die cut the word ‘Sending’ and white heat embossed ‘Lots of Love’ on some more red cardstock and cut it down into a strip.

I then adhered the sentiment pieces and vellum heart onto the panel and then adhered the panel onto some woodgrain cardstock.

I adhered the entire complete panel onto a red card base and to add a little texture I tied a hemp cord bow onto the right hand side of the frame.

The video is linked down below for you.

Thanks so much for stopping by today, I hope you enjoyed and feel inspired. See you next time!

  • Kaleidoscope Heart Layering Die Set! | By Desiree Kuemmerle

Kaleidoscope Heart Layering Die Set! | By Desiree Kuemmerle

    Hello Everyone!

I am back with another project for that last minute Valentine’s Day card! We can always squeeze one more project in, right?!? The Kaleidoscope Layering Die has become one of my many favorites, I just can’t have one!

For this card I started out with all my die cutting of my heart. The card stock I used is a watercolor card for all my pieces, even the heart! Once all my pieces were glued together using my liquid adhesive I set my Kaleidoscope Heart aside to dry. I then used the largest die from the Stitched Heart Die Set to cut out a section of my background panel. I grabbed my cutting board to tape down my watercolor paper and picked out my brush and pallet!

Lets start water coloring! I made sure all my pieces were taped down using my painter tape to avoid my paper warping. I chose my Distress Inks in shades or Pinks, Reds and a splash of purple and placed some ink down onto my pallet. Spraying my water color paper with my mister I then added my color on my panels. Have fun with this and just drop away making sure the colors will blend together.

Once I had my first layer down I removed my Heart from the center and set aside my background panel to dry. I wanted this to have a soft shade of all the colors! I then placed my heart back onto my cutting board for another layer of watercolor.

Using the same colors, I added another layer to intensify the shades on the heart only. It was interesting to see the watercolor go into the layers of the hearts and pool into the cracks of the paper! I removed this from my board and set aside to dry. Yes, I cheated and used my heat tool to speed up the process!
By this time my background had dried and I added some splatters for an embellishment!

I attached my background panel to my standard A2 size card base so I could re-position my stitched heart die to cut through, this way we had an opening on the front of our card where our heart will be placed.

I was thinking about my focal point and the backside and decided to cut one more of Layer C from the Kaleidoscope set from my water color paper and also a piece of vellum.

I placed this section onto my board and used the same color but only for splattering. The beauty of this die is they can be placed again each other on each side!

Now it is finally time to put our card together!

Using my liquid adhesive, I placed my vellum in between my two heart panels and made sure I had glue around the edges and placed into the opening in my background and card base. I know it may sound confusing and difficult but trust me, it is not and plus I always have a video!

I used a sentiment from the Lingo Thanks Clear Stamp Set and cut into a thin strip and set it towards the bottom of my card!

It will be great surprise when the card is open you get a beautiful pop of color!

If you want to see more details just click on the video below and see our project come together step by step!

As always, I hope you enjoyed today’s project…  Make sure you stay tuned for more wonderful projects coming soon!  Have a great day and always remember… Be Creative!

Dahlia Heart Shaker | by Tracey McNeely

Hi there it’s Tracey here with you today. With Valentines Day only a week away I thought I would share a shaker card with you made with Birch Press Design craft dies! I created a video below to show you my process for creating my shaker card.
Smooshing with Distress Oxide inks is one of my favourite  technques that I haven’t done in a while. My smooshing colours were inspired by a card I saw on Kristina Werner’s YouTube channel the other day. I started out by smooshing some Distress Oxide Ink onto my craft mat and then I spritzed it with water. Using a panel of watercolour paper I lay it down into the ink, held it briefly and lifted it. Before adding more ink I dried the panel with my heat tool and repeated this process two more time until the colours all worked in together. This panel is the background to the shaker card. I adhered that watercolour piece to a white top folding card base. Here are the supplies I used today.

Using the Dahlia Heart Layer A die I cut a heart out of my card front, this will be the top of my shaker card. Then using the Dahlia Heart Layer A die once again I die cut one more from silver sparkle cardstock, this piece will inlay the heart on my card front.
To make the shaker I adhered a piece of acetate over the back of the heart on the card front. I used tape runner to make sure the acetate was completely sealed close the edge of the heart. Turning it over on to the tissue backing paper helps to keep any dust off the front while working on the card. I adhered two layers of foam tape all over the back of the front panel, close the edge of the heart and right over to all exterior edges. Then I filled my shaker with sequins. I adhered the background panel/card base carefully to the shaker. Once it was flipped over I inlay the silver sparkle Dahlia die cut into the heart on the front panel. The last step was to add the ‘Hugs’ sentiment which is from the Big Lingo Type Hugs. Have you tried the Big Lingo Word dies yet? they are so cool. You can cut a frame, the word, and an outline that fits right on the edge of the word itself. I die cut he word ‘Hugs’ with white cardstock and then cut the thin cut of the word from the smooshed pieces I created earlier.
Making a shaker is a great way to get more use out of your dies. Your could step this up a notch and build your layers up on the front panel like I did in this post HERE.

Tiny pieces of foam tape were put on the back of the hugs die to give it some added dimension.
Thank you so much for stopping in today to make a shaker with me. I hope you try making a shaker with your Birch Press Design layered dies and when you do tag us in your Facebook and IG posts @birchpressdesign so we can see your work! Have a wonderful weekend!

  • Blending Under Layering Dies | by Justine Hovey

Blending Under Layering Dies | by Justine Hovey

I wanted to create a technique video today featuring ink blending, masking and layering dies. Using the Dahlia Mini Frame layering set, I created a focal point for the die by adding oxide ink to my background. I wanted my background to have a spring tone to it since I’m quite over winter at this point. I love creating bright cards with bold colour that still includes a lot of white space.

For the Dahlia Die, I used a combination of glitter cardstock, satin cardstock and pearlescent cardstock to give a subtle elegance to the card. The sentiment was created by adding some pink ink to cardstock and die cutting the frame.

I hope you enjoyed all of todays techniques and tips in the video. I look forward to creating my next layering card soon!

  • Shining Mandala | by Alicia Havranek

Shining Mandala | by Alicia Havranek

Hello friends!  Today I will be creating a card using the Shining Mandala stamp set and stencils.  I was in the mood for a little ink blending and thought the stencils would be a lot of fun and I wanted to show you how you can use them with the stamp set.

I chose three different shades of Distress Oxides in purple.  After stamping and heat embossing the mandala image on Bristol Smooth cardstock, I ink blended Victorian Velvet all over the card panel.

I then placed one of the stencils over the panel, lining it up accordingly to the image and blended Shaded Lilac.

Finally I placed another stencil over the panel, lining it up accordingly to the image and blended in Seedless Preserves.  I started with the lighter ink because I knew I would be taking darker shades and blending over certain areas.  What is fun about this stencil is that you can create so many looks with whatever colors you choose!  Here is the final look of the panel.

To give the card a more dimensional look, I took a circle die and cut out a portion of the mandala which I then added foam squares to.  I adhered all the pieces to my card base.

From the Shining Mandala stamp set I chose the sentiment, “sending love.”  I stamped the two stamps with black ink, cut them out and popped them up with foam squares before adhering them to my card.  I used some glitter paper to cut out a couple hearts from the Stitched Heart Set die, added foam tape, and adhered them to my card as well for extra sparkle.  For a final touch, I added sequins.

I had so much fun playing with the stencil and stamp set together!  The pattern and color possibilities are really endless and the two let your creativity soar.  There is a process video below if you are interested as well as where you can find these products.

  • Dahlia Mini Frame Layer Set & Giveaway | By Tracey McNeely

Dahlia Mini Frame Layer Set & Giveaway | By Tracey McNeely

Hi there it’s Tracey here today and I am so excited to share a card with you that was made using the brand new Dahlia Mini Frame Layering set. We are sharing projects made with the brand new Valentines release. The card I made today is a thank you card made with this beautiful mini frame die set.
The mini frame was going to be the star of the show so I decided to add all my colour on to the panel behind the frame. Here are the supplies that I used to make the card:
I started off with a watercolour panel that measured 5 1/4″ x 4″ and I sponged three shades of purple Distress Oxide Inks on to it. I spritzed it with water and let the panel dry. Once it was dry I sprayed it with a generous coating of Sheer Glimmer spray to give the panel lots of sparkle. If you don’t have a sparkle spray you could add shine with some glitter, Stickles or even with a shimmer pen like Wink of Stella.
Once the panel was dry I cut out one of each layer of the Dahlia Mini Frame set with heavy white cardstock. The three layers were glued together with a liquid adhesive. I like using liquid adhesive with the Birch Press Design layering dies because it gives you a bit of time to wiggle the layers into place.Once the frame was dry I adhered it to the watercolour panel and then set it aside to dry while I worked on my sentiment. I stamped and die cut the ‘Thanks’ from the brand new Lingo Thanks Stamp set with Copic friendly ink and I coloured the words in ombre with V01 and V15 blending them around the centre where they met. Once the colouring was done the Lingo Thanks die set was used to die cut the word. I set it aside because the main panel was dry and ready to adhere to the card base. I used foam tape to add the panel to the card base for extra dimension.
I was originally going to adhere the panel directly to the card base with tape runner but it didn’t stand out enough. So I carefully removed it and added foam tape pieces to it instead. I was worried that the tape runner might adhere to the card base accidentally so I used my powder tool to go over all the sticky that was around the foam tape. It worked out perfectly. This was one of those moments where I wished I had made a video! I love sharing my mistakes in my posts and how they can be fixed. Before adding the coloured thanks to the frame I backed it with pieces of foam tape so that it would sit at the same height as the frame.
To finish off the card I added a few clear silver Stickle filled sequins that were size 4mm and 6mm. If just gives the card a little more sparkle.
The Dahlia Mini Frame Layering die set is beautiful and can be used for so many occasions–Valentine’s, Easter, spring, summer, birthdays, anniversaries and many more! Right now this die set and some of the other layering sets are on sale at the Birch Press Design store! Check it out and see the rest of this fabulous release!

  • Lingo Alphabet & Giveaway | By Eloise Blue

Lingo Alphabet & Giveaway | By Eloise Blue

Hello friends, Eloise here and today I’m back with a Valentine’s project. I’m using the Lingo Alphabet Dies, Adora Layer C Dies and Lingo Thanks Stamp Set. Today is also another day of the Blog Blitz, so at the end of the post there will be details about the die set being given away today.

I started off with ink blending some Distress Oxide Inks onto a piece of watercolour cardstock. I created two strips to be able to cut all the letters I needed out. Once they were ink blended, I flicked on some water and dried it with a heat tool. I then die cut all the letters out needed for ‘I Love You’ from the Lingo Alphabet Die Set.

(Distress Oxide Inks Used: Tattered Rose, Worn Lipstick, Picked Raspberry)

I then white heat embossed the sentiment ‘You Mean The World To Me’ from Lingo Thanks onto a strip of black cardstock. I cleaned up my embossing with a black pen and set that off to the side with my letters.

I wanted a super simple background, so the sentiment could be the main focus. I decided to do a grey watercolour background. I used my Mijello Misson Gold Palette and did a few stripes. I dried it with a heat tool and then cut the piece down to size.

I then roughly laid out my layout and decided I needed an extra colour, plus something to scatter. I used the Adora Layer C Die as it cuts many little hearts out.

I quickly ink blended some more Distress Oxide Inks onto another piece of watercolour cardstock, making sure to cover the whole background as I’ll use the rest later. I flicked on a little water, dried it and die cut the layer from it. I picked out a few hearts from it to scatter.

(Distress Oxide Inks Used: Abandoned Coral, Candied Apple, Fired Brick)

Lastly, it’s time to assemble. I took some twine and laid it down onto my background. I adhered my letters on top using foam tape, which also adhered down the twine. I scattered my hearts around as well to add a little extra. I added foam tape onto my additional sentiment and adhered it down into place as well. I cut off the ends of the string leaving a little showing.

To finish up I took the same red paper I made before and adhered my panel on top using foam tape. I adhered the entire panel onto a card base and my card was complete.

Amour Arch Layering Card & Giveaway | by Alicia Havranek

Hello!  Today I am featuring the new Amour Arch Layering Die Set from the recent Valentine’s Day release.  In addition to the Amour Arch Die I am using the new Stitched Heart Set and Lingo Thanks stamp set and die.  To celebrate the new release there is a giveaway as well!  You can find the details below.

I used the three Amour Arch dies to cut out red (layer A), black (layer B), and gray (layer C) cardstock.  Once adhering them together, I attached them to a white card base.  I used the Stitched Heart Die set to cut out the two larger hearts with some glitter cardstock.  The smaller hearts are left overs from the Amour Arch die.  I attached the hearts with some foam squares to give them extra dimension.

For the sentiment I stamped the love and hug on black cardstock and heat embossed with white embossing powder, then die cut them with the coordinating dies.  I used dimensionals as well to pop up the sentiment.  There is a video process of this card if you want to check it out.  It will be at the bottom of this post.
