Find Joy Prime Peonies | by Crystal Komara

Hello readers and happy Friday to you! I hope you have fun (and creative) things planned for the weekend ahead. This is Design Team member Crystal Komara here with you today sharing this card using the Prime Peony Duo Contour Layers.

Now, before I get into the details of how I made this card, I want to take a minute to appreciate the intricate WORK and time commitment involved with contour layering dies! If you think you’re just going to throw a card like this together and also juggle cooking dinner, doing a load of towels, tending to a puking cat and watching Friends reruns, oh no, no, no, my friend, that ain’t gonna happen! Contour layering dies take an extreme amount of concentration, patience and precision. I lack all three. At best, I’m spastic in thought, I have the patience of a 5-year old and I’m of the philosophy that “done is better than perfect!!” So, for me, while contour layering dies (when completed) are absolutely gorgeous, the journey getting there is kinda sheer torture.

But, look at this card, ain’t she a beaut?!

But, I learned a few helpful tips while making this card I want to share with you to help make your contour layering dies journey less painful. First, we are going to make the peonies using a variety of pink cardstocks.

    1. Don’t be in a rush – contour layering dies take time and if you know this ahead of time, it’s half the battle

    2. Organization – when you die cut the Prime Peony flowers, keep them in organized rows

    2. Follow the Directions (or the provided image) – they really do make sense in how you put the peony layers together!

*Use a fine tip glue to adhere these intricate tiny layers together.
*Tip – use a fine tip liquid glue for adhering tiny layers together.
Die cut the larger word shadow from pink cardstock and the thinner word outline from white cardstock.
Die cut the Linear Triangle from white cardstock.

Because I had fully committed myself to making this one card (and not being interrupted by anything else) I found the process went much more smoothly. I love the end result SO much that I now intend to work more with the contour layering dies!

Thanks for visiting and have a wonderfully creative day!

Snowy Circle Quarters | By Seeka

Hello and welcome! Seeka here and today I’m sharing a card featuring the Snowy Circle Layer and the Handwritten Merry Christmas And Outline die sets.

I started off by die cutting the three snowy circle layers from teal, white, and light blue cardstocks (the Fresh Aqua 6×6 paper pad has some nice options). I glued the layers together and then cut the finished circle into quarters.

Next, I cut a 2.5″ x 4.75″ panel of white cardstock and glued the quarters into the corners. I added the sentiment, cut from a dark teal cardstock and glued to a vellum shadow layer, and then glued the panel to a 2.75″ x 5″ frame of teal cardstock.

To finish, I used foam tape to adhere the panel to a 4.25″ x 5.5″ white card base and then glued small clear drops to the centers of each snowflake for a bit of sparkle.

Thank you so much for visiting!

    Floral Bouquet Hello
    by Jeanne Jachna

Hi and thanks for stopping by! Today I thought I’d make a floral bouquet to show you how well the new Birch Press Design floral release looks assembled together on one card!

I’m smitten with these gorgeous florals and think I could make with them all day long. I’ve cut the flowers in lots of different colors so I have my pick of the garden.

The background of my card is the Viola Layer B from the 3 die set. I love the pierced design and think it looks like lace!

I arrange the florals on a piece of clear plastic the size of my card base to help me figure out the design. I started with the two larger Winsome Roses in the lower corner with two Eucalyptus Stems tucked underneath. Pimpernel leaves are tucked under the roses, and Tiny Tuft and Star Flowers are scattered through the foliage.

The finishing touch are some dew drops – some Memory Box Fairy Drops! I really love making with these florals.. it’s rainy here and sometimes you have to make your own sunshine!

    Berries Galore | By Seeka

Hello and welcome! Seeka here and today and I’m sharing another clean and simple card featuring the Eucalyptus Stem and Berries Contour Layers die set.

For this card I went with pink and red berries and aqua leaves. I started by die cutting the leaves and branches from two colors of aqua cardstock. I glued the darker detail layers of each leaf onto the lighter base layer. Then I cut berries from pink and red cardstock and glued them to their stems.

Next, I created the sentiment using the Big Hello Sugar Script die set. I cut the detail layer from red cardstock and the shadow layer from white cardstock.

To assemble the card, I glued the base of the leafy stems to a 4.25″ x 5.5″ panel of white cardstock and then I used foam tape to pop up some of the leaves and berries. I also used foam tape to adhere the die-cut sentiment as well as a smaller sentiment from my stash. I trimmed any stem ends that were peeking out from behind the sentiment and then to finish, I adhered the card front to a card base.

Blue Frosty Flake | By Seeka

Hello and welcome! Seeka here and today I’m sharing a card featuring the Frosty Flake die set over a background made with Distress Paint.

I started with the background. I dropped several drops of Broken China Distress Paint onto a craft mat and then sprayed the drops with a few spritzes of clean clear water. Next, I dragged a 4.25″ x 5.5″ inch piece of heavy white cardstock through the drops, covering most of the panel with paint. While the paint and panel are wet, the diluted paint moves around to create a soft and cloudy effect. I let the panel dry a bit and then dabbed it again into the paint on the craft mat to create the more distinct droplets of color.

While the panel was drying, I used the Frosty Flake Layer die set to die cut two snowflakes. I die cut layer A from white cardstock twice and layer C from Tonic Craft Perfect Silky Sky Satin Effect Mirror cardstock twice; I skipped layer B. I adhered the layers of each snowflake together and then set them aside.

Next, I used the Simple Joy die to create the sentiment. I cut the detail layer from the same Silky Sky cardstock, and I cut the shadow layer from white cardstock. Then I adhered the two layers together.

To assemble the card, I adhered the two snowflakes to the background and then used foam tape to adhere the sentiment. Finally, I adhered the card front to a card base.

Thank you so much for visiting!

  • Pad To Paper Ink Blending for Shadow Dies By Ashlea Cornell

Pad To Paper Ink Blending for Shadow Dies
    By Ashlea Cornell

Hello everyone! My name is Ashlea and I am so excited to be on the Birch Press Designs blog for the first time. I have always loved the Birch Press Designs style and quality of product, and I am thrilled to be a part of this team to help inspire and spark ideas! For my first post, I thought I’d focus on a simple but effective technique using shadow dies. Since Birch Press has many word and shadow dies, I wanted to provide ideas of different ways to use them as often as possible! I love the pad to paper technique of rubbing an ink pad onto a piece of card stock in order to transfer a very rich and vibrant color that you just can’t get from the traditional ink blenders. Here’s a video showing a detailed tutorial of how I achieved this look.

I love this technique as it allows me to stretch my uses for these word and shadow dies. It’s super simple!

First, you’ll want to pick 3-4 colors of ink pads that won’t turn “muddy” when the colors meet. Basically, you’ll want to choose colors close to each other on the color wheel. I used Catherine Pooler inks for my pad to paper technique here because I love her pads, especially for pad to paper techniques.

Once I blended all of my colors and cut the shadow die out using the ink blended spaces, I adhered all of the letters to the shadow dies and adhered them to a card front cut with Memory Box Wrapped Stitched Rectangles dies to add a little interest to the border.

Finally, I adhered all of the word dies to the card front with foam tape to add dimension and heat embossed the sentiment “You’re In My Heart” from the Lingo Love stamp set and adhered that over the second word die down.

I hope that you’ve enjoyed learning a bit about how I created this card using the ink pad to paper technique. I hope you’ll try it out on your cards and enjoy it as much as I do! Thanks so much for stopping by and I’ll see you again soon!
